The community of Citrus Springs, Florida was originally developed by the Mackle family- a wealthy family that was influential in the state throughout the 20th century- and was officially opened as a planned community in 1970.

Although there is no public transportation that services Citrus Springs specifically, there is a Greyhound station in Crystal River and an Amtrak station in Ocala. The closest major airport is the Gainesville Regional Airport.
