The community of Citrus Springs, Florida was originally developed by the Mackle family- a wealthy family that was influential in the state throughout the 20th century- and was officially opened as a planned community in 1970. Even today, remnants of the past are seen within the city, with the name of Elkcam Boulevard, a main thoroughfare through the community, being derived by spelling Mackle backwards.

The community has grown a great deal since 2000, with its population increasing by 100.7%.
